Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

The Religions and Theology department is pleased to be able to support applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship scheme 2022-23. The scheme offers a three-year award to post-doctoral early career researchers who have a developing research record but have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post.

Fellows are expected to undertake a significant piece of publishable work, distinguishable from their PhD project, during the period of their award. This means that this scheme is not usually suitable for candidates who have only recently submitted their PhD. Most successful past applicants have already published work based on their PhD and offer genuinely original projects for the Leverhulme scheme. We are particularly interested in applications from external candidates, but applications from current postdoctoral students are also welcome.

If you would like to be considered, you are strongly advised to contact your proposed departmental mentor before submitting your proposal, and you are also encouraged to make informal contact with Alex Samely to discuss your project.

Applicants who would like to be hosted by the Religions and Theology Department at the University of Manchester must submit a draft proposal by email to Prof. Alex Samely (alex.samely@manchester.ac.uk), by Monday 1 November 2021, using the attached form.  An internal panel within the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures will then decide which applications to put forward to the Leverhulme (by mid-January 2022). Candidates and academic sponsors will be advised of successful applicants once the reviewing/selection has been completed. Applicants who are successful at this stage will receive specialist support from the University to complete the full application process to the Leverhulme Trust before the application deadline on 24 February 2022.
